NATSEM Budget Impact Map

About

This project was developed in October 2014 for the National Centre for Socioeconomic Modelling (NATSEM) and the Australian Workplace Innovation and Social Research Centre (WiSER).

NATSEM provided a set of research data forecasting the annual impact the Australian Federal Budget (2014-2015) would have on families by 2017-2018, grouped by Federal Electorate.

The aim of this project was to provide an interactive map, where visitors could locate their electorate and view the forecasted impact on their financial situation.

A link to the map was included in stories published by a variety of local and national media outlets, and accessed by over 5,000 unique visitors in the following 48 hours:

Implementation

This project makes use of the following technologies:

  • Geospatial data provided by the Australian Electoral Commission was converted into KML for use in Google Maps.
  • Google Fusion Tables was used to host the KML and Budget Impact datasets – this was accessed on the page using a JavaScript API provided by Google.
  • Google Maps JavaScript API – the dataset extracted from Google Fusion Tables is overlaid on a map of Australia. Regions are colour-coded based on the level of impact, and can be clicked on for more information.
  • The web site also makes use of:
